How to choose a kindergarten in 2026

People who search kindergarten rankings usually want fit, fees and dates. A league table answers none of those. This page uses only fields the EDB directory actually has, and tells you how to verify the numbers it does not have.

Narrow the district before the Hong Kong rank

The directory lists 1006 kindergartens and KG-cum-child care centres. Comparing all of them at once does not help. Pick the district you can travel twice a day, then open that district page. 九龍城區 has the most schools (92); a long list is not higher quality.

Session beats “famous school”

736 rows list a whole-day session; the rest are mainly morning or afternoon. Whole-day versus half-day is a family logistics choice, not a quality score. If you need whole-day care, do not switch because a half-day school sits higher on a list.

How to use a ranking — and how not to

70 schools have a media-shortlist anchor. The other 936 are labelled estimates from public fields such as district, name, session and whether a website is listed. EDB publishes no official banding. Treating an estimate as an admission chance misuses the number.

Fees and the Free Quality scheme: verify, do not copy a figure

Almost every funding field in the location file says Private. That field is not tuition, and it is not scheme membership. The reliable steps are: ask the school for this year’s fee schedule, and check EDB’s published scheme list. This site does not print tuition, voucher amounts or admission rates.

Deadlines belong to the school’s own notice

A “September cutoff” in an article is only a season marker. Open days, forms and Registration Certificate steps differ by school. Call the directory phone and ask for this year’s dates, then check EDB’s Registration Certificate window. Do not reuse last year’s cutoff.

Which Hong Kong kindergarten is best?
None is best for every family. Fix the commute you can actually do and the session you need (morning, afternoon or whole-day), then call using the directory address and phone. A Hong Kong rank is a last filter, not a substitute for a visit.
Is there official kindergarten banding?
No. EDB does not publish a league table. This site’s Top 100 uses media shortlists as anchors and labels the rest as estimates. A high place is not easier admission or better teaching.
How do I check fees and the subsidy scheme?
The EDB location file has no tuition, and “Private” does not tell you whether a school joins the Free Quality Kindergarten Education Scheme. Ask the school for this year’s prospectus and check EDB’s scheme list. We do not publish fees.
When should I start?
Most families start the summer to autumn before the admission year, then confirm that school’s own deadline. Dates change; do not trust an old article’s cutoff.
